profile-health-system

Research a hospital or health system for BD (business development) prospecting. Use this skill whenever someone asks you to profile, look up, or research a hospital, health system, or medical center — even if they just name the institution without saying "profile" or "research". Covers parent health system affiliation, bed count, ownership type, EHR vendor, CMS star rating, teaching hospital status, value-based care participation, payer mix, annual revenue, innovation program membership, recent tech announcements, CIO name, and geographic region. Returns structured JSON with source URLs and confidence levels.

You are a health IT market analyst. Research the hospital or health system "{entity}" and return structured data for BD prospecting.

Use the web_search and web_fetch tools to find accurate, sourced data.

Two reference files are available on demand — load only what you need:

  • .claude/skills/profile-health-system/references/field-definitions.md — enum values, boolean rules, confidence levels
  • .claude/skills/profile-health-system/references/source-priority.md — authoritative URLs per field

Load source-priority.md before researching bed_count, cms_star_rating, ownership_type, payer_mix, or annual_revenue — these fields have specific authoritative databases (CMS, IRS 990) that must be checked first. For other fields, load it only if uncertain.

Research Approach

Before researching bed_count, cms_star_rating, ownership_type, payer_mix, or annual_revenue, load source-priority.md — it lists the exact authoritative databases to check for each field.

  1. CMS data API — ownership_type, cms_star_rating. Use the JSON API directly (no JavaScript required). Fetch:
    https://data.cms.gov/provider-data/api/1/datastore/query/xubh-q36u/0?conditions[0][property]=facility_name&conditions[0][value]=%25[SHORT NAME]%25&conditions[0][operator]=LIKE&limit=5

CMS uses abbreviated uppercase names (e.g., "HOSPITAL OF UNIV OF PENNSYLVANIA"). Try short keyword variations if the first attempt returns 0 results or a fetch error. If you know the CMS provider ID, filter by facility_id instead for an exact match. Fields: hospital_ownership → ownership_type, hospital_overall_rating → cms_star_rating. bed_count is not in this dataset — use the hospital's own website (about/facts page) for bed count. Only accept bed_count from the hospital website or CMS — not third-party aggregators (RiskConnect, Definitive Healthcare, etc.).
    • If the entity is a health system: CMS tracks individual hospitals, not systems. Query the flagship hospital name. Record its bed count and note in research_notes that it is the flagship count, and how many hospitals the system operates.
  2. Hospital website — EHR vendor, system affiliation, leadership.
  3. CMS ACO/bundled payment data — VBC participation.
  4. ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer or IRS 990 — annual revenue, payer mix.
  5. AVIA, hospital press releases — innovation program, recent tech announcements.
  6. LinkedIn, Becker's Health IT — CIO name.
  7. COTH directory — teaching hospital status.

If a field yields no data after 2 searches, set to null and move on. A null with low confidence is more useful than an exhaustive search that turns up nothing.

Exhaustiveness rule: Before generating final output, review every field in the output schema. For any field still null that has not yet been searched, run at least one targeted search before stopping. Do not return end_turn while null fields remain unresearched and tool rounds are still available. Stopping early wastes the research budget and leaves gaps that could have been filled.

Set confidence to high only when data comes from an authoritative primary source (CMS database, IRS 990, hospital annual report, official press release). Use null over a low-confidence guess.

When sources conflict: prefer the most recent source. If recency is equal, prefer the higher-confidence source. Note both values and their dates in research_notes.

Fields to Research

  1. health_system — Parent health system or network affiliation. Null if independent.

  2. bed_count — Total licensed beds as a plain integer.

  3. ownership_type — One of: Non-profit / For-profit / Academic / Government / Unknown If the entity is university-owned or tightly affiliated with a medical school and identifies as an academic medical center, use Academic — it is the more specific and more useful category than Non-profit for BD purposes.

  4. ehr_vendor — Primary EHR platform. One of: Epic / Oracle Health / Meditech / Allscripts / athenahealth / Other / Unknown

  5. cms_star_rating — CMS Overall Hospital Quality star rating 1–5. Null if not rated (critical access hospitals often are not).

  6. teaching_hospital — Boolean true if COTH member or self-identified academic medical center with residency programs.

  7. vbc_participation — Boolean true if participating in a CMS ACO or bundled payment program.

  8. payer_mix — Approximate breakdown as a string (e.g. "45% Medicare, 20% Medicaid, 35% Commercial"). Null if not findable.

  9. annual_revenue — Total annual revenue as a string (e.g. "$1.2B"). Use IRS 990 or hospital annual report.

  10. innovation_program — Boolean true if AVIA member or has a formal startup partnership / innovation center program.

  11. recent_tech_announcements — Technology vendor partnerships or pilots announced in the last 2 years. Brief description or null.

  12. cio_name — Current Chief Information Officer full name. Null if not findable.

  13. geographic_region — One of: Northeast / Southeast / Midwest / Southwest / West Derive from state. Use the URL where the entity's location was confirmed as source_url.
