Build a comprehensive Research Brief that provides everything the Content Drafter needs to write excellent, well-sourced content without doing additional research.

CRITICAL: If no confirmed title has been provided, you MUST run Title Curation (Step 0.5) before starting research. Do NOT auto-select a title or skip to SERP analysis with just a topic.


EXECUTION STEPS

Step 0: Initialize Pipeline Tracking

Before beginning research, initialize the pipeline performance tracker:

Step 0.5: Title Curation — MANDATORY

If a confirmed title was NOT provided as input, you MUST complete this step before proceeding to Step 1.

Do NOT skip this step. Do NOT auto-select a title. Do NOT start SERP analysis with just a topic.

0.5.1 Pre-Flight Brand Check

Before generating titles, load and validate the brand profile:

  1. Load brand profile from ~/.claude-marketing/{brand}/Brand-Guidelines/{Brand}-brand-profile.json (or ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_DATA}/{brand}/)

  2. Extract and verify these fields are non-empty:

    • voice.tone (authoritative, conversational, technical, witty, etc.)
    • voice.formality (formal, business_casual, casual)
    • voice.personality_traits (array of traits)
    • terminology.prohibited_terms (banned words list)
    • guardrails.prohibited_claims (claims the brand cannot make)
    • target_audience.primary_persona (who this content is for)
  3. If any REQUIRED field is empty, warn the user:

These gaps may affect content quality:
  - Empty guardrails → compliance checks will be skipped
  - No audience persona → content may not match reader expectations
  - No prohibited terms → brand terminology won't be enforced

0.5.2 Quick SERP Reconnaissance

Before generating titles, do a lightweight SERP check to understand competitive landscape:

  1. Run a web search for "{Primary Keyword}" (exact match)

  2. Scan the top 5 results only (not the full Step 1 analysis — just titles and angles):

    • What title structures are ranking? (how-to, listicle, question, stat-led, etc.)
    • What keywords appear in competitor titles?
    • What content angle dominates the SERP?
    • What's MISSING from competitor titles? (this is your differentiation opportunity)
  3. Store as serp_context for title generation. This is a quick 1-minute scan, NOT the full Step 1 SERP analysis.

0.5.3 Generate Title Options

Using the topic, content type, brand voice, audience persona, primary keyword, AND serp_context, generate 4-5 distinct title options.

IMPORTANT: Adapt title angles by content type:

For Blog Posts (800-1500 words):

  1. Trending / Timely — Connects to current events or recent data
  2. How-to / Tactical — Actionable, step-by-step framing
  3. Listicle / Data-driven — "N Ways/Tips/Trends" with a number
  4. Question-based — Answers a specific search query
  5. Contrarian / Hot take — Challenges a common belief

For Articles (1500-3000 words):

  1. Authority / Definitive — "The Complete Guide to..." or "Everything You Need to Know About..."
  2. Analysis / Data-driven — Opens with a compelling statistic or trend
  3. Problem-Solution — Names the pain point, promises the fix
  4. Future-focused — "The Future of..." or "What's Next for..."

For Whitepapers (3000-6000 words):

0.5.4 Apply Brand Voice to Titles

Adjust each title option based on brand personality:

  • Authoritative brand → Use definitive language ("The Complete...", "The Definitive...", "Everything You Need to Know")
  • Conversational brand → Use casual language ("Here's What...", "Why You Should...", "Let's Talk About...")
  • Technical brand → Use precise terminology, include technical terms, avoid simplification
  • Witty brand → Allow wordplay, unexpected angles, clever framing
  • Warm/Educational brand → Use inviting language ("Your Guide to...", "Understanding...", "A Friendly Introduction to...")

0.5.5 Validate Titles Against Brand Guardrails

Before presenting to user, check EACH title against:

  • terminology.prohibited_terms — reject titles containing banned words
  • guardrails.prohibited_claims — reject titles making prohibited claims (e.g., "best", "#1", "guaranteed" if brand prohibits absolute claims)
  • Google SERP character limit — titles should be ≤60 characters to avoid truncation in search results (override the content-type defaults if they exceed 60)
  • Anti-clickbait check — ensure titles don't make promises the content can't deliver
  • Differentiation check — compare against serp_context to ensure titles don't duplicate what's already ranking

Replace any rejected titles with alternatives that comply.

0.5.6 Present to User

Each title must:

  • Include the primary keyword naturally
  • Stay within 60 characters (Google SERP safe) — show character count
  • Be specific and differentiated from competitor titles
  • Match brand voice/personality
  • Be appropriate for the content type

Step 1: SERP Analysis (Top 10 Results)

Prerequisite: Confirmed Title must be set (from Step 0.5 or provided as input). If not, STOP and go back to Step 0.5.

  • Do NOT stall indefinitely waiting for search results.

For EACH of the top 10 results, document:

  1. Title — Full page title
  2. URL — Complete URL
  3. Domain Authority — If recognizable (e.g., Forbes, Mayo Clinic = high)
  4. Estimated Word Count — Approximate length
  5. Content Angle — What unique perspective does this take?
    • Example: "Beginner's guide focusing on simplicity"
    • Example: "Data-driven analysis with industry benchmarks"
    • Example: "Contrarian take challenging common assumptions"
  6. Structure — H1 → H2 outline (major sections)
  7. Strengths — What makes this rank well?
    • Data/statistics?
    • Comprehensive coverage?
    • Strong backlinks/authority?
    • Unique insights?
  8. Gaps — What's missing or could be improved?
    • Topics not covered
    • Outdated information
    • Lack of depth in certain areas

Identify SERP Patterns:

  • Common structure across top results
  • Average content length
  • Recurring keywords/phrases
  • Dominant content formats (guides, listicles, how-tos, etc.)

Step 2: Competitive Content Gap Analysis

Synthesize your SERP analysis:

What top results do WELL:

  • [List 3-5 specific insights with examples]

What top results MISS:

  • [List 3-5 specific gaps]
  • Example: "None cover implementation challenges or real-world pitfalls"

Step 3: Trusted Source Mining

Use Claude's web_search + web_fetch to find 12-15 authoritative sources:

Prioritize sources from config/data-sources-template.json:

  • Peer-reviewed journals (PubMed, Google Scholar)
  • Government databases (CDC, FDA, SEC, BLS)
  • Industry reports (Gartner, Forrester, McKinsey)
  • Tier 1 news (WSJ, Reuters, Bloomberg)

For EACH source, document:

  1. Source Name — Full official name
  2. URL — Full URL (verify it's live)
  3. Source Type — Academic Journal | Government Database | Industry Report | News Tier 1 | News Tier 2 | Company Official
  4. Author/Organization — Who published this?
  5. Publication Date — When was this published?
  6. Reliability Score — 1-10 (use data-sources-template.json as guide)
  7. Relevance — High | Medium | Low (to our topic)
  8. Key Data Points — Extract 1-3 specific facts, statistics, or quotes
    • Use EXACT quotes with quotation marks
    • Include context (what the stat measures)
  9. Where to Use — Which section of outline will cite this?

Minimum Requirements:

  • At least 5 sources with Reliability Score ≥9
  • At least 8 sources total with Reliability Score ≥7
  • No more than 30% from single source type
  • All URLs verified as live and accessible
  • Sources published within last 2 years (or industry-specific recency rule)

Source Quality Checks:

  • Run web_fetch on each URL to verify accessibility
  • Check publication date is within recency limits
  • Verify author credentials or organizational authority
  • Cross-reference stats with at least 2 independent sources

Step 4: Key Statistics & Data Points

Extract 8-12 compelling statistics to support content:

For each stat:

  1. Data — Exact statistic with units
    • Example: "73% of marketing agencies use AI for content production (up from 12% in 2024)"
  2. Source — Which citation number from your library?
  3. Context — What does this stat mean? Why does it matter?
  4. Use In — Which outline section will feature this?
  5. Verification — Corroborated by at least 1 additional source? (Yes/No)

Quality Check:

  • Are statistics recent (within 2 years unless evergreen)?
  • Do numbers make logical sense (not hallucinated)?
  • Can you trace each stat back to original source?
  • Are percentages, sample sizes, time periods clear?

Step 5: Recommended Content Angle

Based on gap analysis and brand positioning:

  • Outline maps to target word count (estimated total within ±10%)
  • All outline sections have designated source material
  • SERP analysis shows ranking opportunity (gaps identified)
  • All URLs verified live (use web_fetch)
  • Statistics cross-referenced (at least 2 sources for key stats)

If ANY criterion fails:

  • Mark Quality Gate 1 as FAIL
  • Document specific issues
  • Request clarification or additional research
