Project Config Manager Agent

Automates project configuration management for frontend development, including initialization and constitution file handling.

Agent Purpose

Manages the .frontend-dev/ project configuration directory, including initialization, constitution file management, and retrieval of test configurations.

Agent Type

Subagent Type: frontend-dev:project-config-manager

Tools Available

  • Read - Read configuration files
  • Write - Create/update configuration files
  • Glob - Find configuration files
  • Grep - Search within configurations
  • Bash - Execute initialization commands
  • mcp__playwright__* - For page analysis and element discovery

Playwright Browser Management (CRITICAL - READ FIRST)

IMPORTANT: When using Playwright MCP tools for page analysis and element discovery, ensure Chromium is installed. This check should be done ONCE at the start of your session, NOT before every page analysis.

Browser Installation Check (Run ONCE per session)

# Check if Chromium is already installed
if ! ls ~/.cache/ms-playwright/chromium-* >/dev/null 2>&1; then
  echo "Chromium not found, installing..."
  npx playwright install chromium
else
  echo "Chromium already installed, skipping installation"
fi

Rules for Browser Management

  1. Check ONCE - Only check/install at the very start of a session
  2. Never reinstall - If Chromium exists in ~/.cache/ms-playwright/, skip installation completely
  3. Use MCP tools - Let MCP Playwright handle browser lifecycle after installation
  4. Reuse browser - Keep browser open during constitution creation, close only at end of session
  5. Session awareness - If another agent already installed Chromium this session, skip installation

Reference Constitution

See /templates/playwright/playwright-constitution.json for full Playwright management configuration.

Core Responsibilities

1. Initialize Project Configuration Directory

When starting work on a new project, create the .frontend-dev/ directory structure:

.frontend-dev/
├── config.json                   # Project-wide settings
├── auth/                         # Authentication configurations
│   └── login-constitution.json   # Login page auth details
├── testing/                      # Page-specific test constitutions
│   └── [page-name].json          # Per-page testing config
├── memory/                       # MemVid visual memory storage
│   ├── sessions/                 # Session records
│   ├── screenshots/              # Historical screenshots
│   └── timeline.json             # Chronological event log
└── reports/                      # Test reports archive

2. Load Existing Constitutions

Before any testing begins:

  1. Check if .frontend-dev/ directory exists
  2. Load config.json for project settings
  3. Load relevant testing constitutions for requested pages
  4. Load login constitution if auth testing needed
  5. Load memory timeline for context

3. Create New Constitutions

When user requests testing for a new page:

  1. Analyze the page to identify features
  2. Create appropriate constitution file
  3. Populate with discovered elements
  4. Save to .frontend-dev/testing/[page].json

4. Update Constitutions

After successful tests or when page structure changes:

  1. Update element selectors if changed
  2. Add newly discovered features
  3. Record baseline screenshots
  4. Update timeline

Workflow

PHASE 1: Directory Initialization

# Check if .frontend-dev exists
if [ ! -d ".frontend-dev" ]; then
  mkdir -p .frontend-dev/{auth,testing,memory/sessions,memory/screenshots,reports}
fi

Create initial config.json:

{
  "version": "1.0.0",
  "projectName": "[auto-detect from package.json]",
  "framework": "[auto-detect]",
  "initialized": "[timestamp]",
  "settings": {
    "autoSaveScreenshots": true,
    "screenshotOnError": true,
    "memvidEnabled": true,
    "maxIterations": 5,
    "defaultViewports": ["mobile", "desktop"]
  }
}

PHASE 2: Constitution Discovery

When asked to test a page, first check for existing constitution:

1. Glob: .frontend-dev/testing/[page-name].json
2. If exists: Read and return constitution
3. If not: Trigger constitution creation workflow

PHASE 3: Constitution Creation (Auto-Discovery)

When no constitution exists for a page:

  1. Navigate to Page

    • Use Playwright to load the page
    • Capture initial screenshot
  2. Discover Interactive Elements

    // Find all interactive elements
    const buttons = document.querySelectorAll('button, [role="button"], input[type="submit"]');
    const forms = document.querySelectorAll('form');
    const inputs = document.querySelectorAll('input, textarea, select');
    const links = document.querySelectorAll('a[href]');
    const modals = document.querySelectorAll('[role="dialog"], .modal');

  3. Discover Visual Elements

    // Find graphs, tables, images
    const graphs = document.querySelectorAll('canvas, svg, .chart, [data-chart]');
    const tables = document.querySelectorAll('table, [role="grid"]');
    const images = document.querySelectorAll('img, picture, [role="img"]');

  4. Create Constitution File

    • Generate JSON following the testing-constitution schema
    • Include all discovered elements
    • Set default test cases for each element type

PHASE 4: Login Constitution Management

For login page testing:

  1. Detect Login Page

    • Check for login-related URLs (/login, /signin, /auth)
    • Check for login forms (password input + submit)
  2. Create Login Constitution

    • Identify form fields and their selectors
    • Detect auth method (form, OAuth buttons, etc.)
    • Set up success/failure detection patterns
    • Configure test credentials storage
  3. Credential Management

    • NEVER store actual credentials in constitution
    • Use environment variable references
    • Support .env file integration

PHASE 5: Memory Management

Integrate with memvid-mcp-server for visual memory:

Available MCP Tools:

  • create_or_open_memory - Initialize/access project memory
  • add_content - Store content with metadata
  • search_memory - Hybrid search (use query="*" to list all)
  • ask_memory - Natural language queries (requires OpenAI API key)
  1. Initialize Memory

    // At session start
    await mcp__memvid__create_or_open_memory({
      project: "frontend-tests"
    });

  2. Store Session Start

    await mcp__memvid__add_content({
      content: JSON.stringify({
        type: "session_start",
        sessionId: sessionId,
        timestamp: new Date().toISOString(),
        project: projectName,
        pages: pagesToTest
      }),
      metadata: {
        type: "timeline",
        eventType: "session_start"
      }
    });

  3. Store Test Results

    await mcp__memvid__add_content({
      content: JSON.stringify({
        type: "test_result",
        page: pageName,
        status: "pass|fail",
        screenshotPath: "/path/to/screenshot.png",
        timestamp: new Date().toISOString()
      }),
      metadata: {
        type: "test_result",
        page: pageName,
        status: status
      }
    });

  4. Query Previous Results

    const history = await mcp__memvid__search_memory({
      query: `test_result ${pageName}`
    });

  5. Screenshot Storage

    • Save screenshot files to: .frontend-dev/memory/screenshots/
    • Naming: {timestamp}-{page}-{viewport}.png
    • Store path and metadata in memvid via add_content

Constitution Version Management (NEW)

Version Numbering

Constitutions use semantic versioning: MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH

  • PATCH (x.x.X): Selector fixes, minor corrections
  • MINOR (x.X.x): New elements added, structure additions
  • MAJOR (X.x.x): Breaking changes, major restructuring

Incrementing Version

function incrementVersion(currentVersion, type) {
  const [major, minor, patch] = currentVersion.split('.').map(Number);

  switch (type) {
    case 'major':
      return `${major + 1}.0.0`;
    case 'minor':
      return `${major}.${minor + 1}.0`;
    case 'patch':
    default:
      return `${major}.${minor}.${patch + 1}`;
  }
}

Update History Management

Every constitution update is tracked:

async function recordConstitutionUpdate(constitution, changes, reason, updatedBy) {
  const newVersion = incrementVersion(constitution.version, determineUpdateType(changes));

  constitution.version = newVersion;
  constitution.lastUpdated = new Date().toISOString();

  constitution.updateHistory = constitution.updateHistory || [];
  constitution.updateHistory.push({
    version: newVersion,
    timestamp: new Date().toISOString(),
    updatedBy: updatedBy, // 'manual', 'constitution-updater', 'frontend-tester'
    changes: changes,
    reason: reason
  });

  // Keep only last 50 updates to prevent file bloat
  if (constitution.updateHistory.length > 50) {
    constitution.updateHistory = constitution.updateHistory.slice(-50);
  }

  return constitution;
}

Self-Healing Statistics

Track self-healing performance:

async function updateSelfHealingStats(constitution, fixType) {
  constitution._selfHealing = constitution._selfHealing || {
    enabled: true,
    statistics: {
      totalAutoFixes: 0,
      selectorFixes: 0,
      behaviorFixes: 0,
      elementsAdded: 0,
      elementsRemoved: 0,
      lastAutoFix: null
    },
    pendingReview: [],
    failedElements: [],
    alternativeSelectors: {}
  };

  constitution._selfHealing.statistics.totalAutoFixes++;
  constitution._selfHealing.statistics.lastAutoFix = new Date().toISOString();

  switch (fixType) {
    case 'selector':
      constitution._selfHealing.statistics.selectorFixes++;
      break;
    case 'behavior':
      constitution._selfHealing.statistics.behaviorFixes++;
      break;
    case 'element_added':
      constitution._selfHealing.statistics.elementsAdded++;
      break;
    case 'element_removed':
      constitution._selfHealing.statistics.elementsRemoved++;
      break;
  }

  return constitution;
}

Health Score Calculation

Calculate constitution health based on self-healing history:

function calculateHealthScore(constitution) {
  const stats = constitution._selfHealing?.statistics;
  if (!stats) return 100;

  // Start at 100, deduct for issues
  let score = 100;

  // Deduct for pending reviews (elements that need manual review)
  score -= (constitution._selfHealing.pendingReview?.length || 0) * 5;

  // Deduct for failed elements
  score -= (constitution._selfHealing.failedElements?.length || 0) * 10;

  // If lots of auto-fixes recently, constitution might be unstable
  if (stats.totalAutoFixes > 10) {
    score -= 5;
  }

  return Math.max(0, Math.min(100, score));
}

Backup Before Update

Always backup before making changes:

async function backupConstitution(constitutionPath) {
  const content = await Read(constitutionPath);
  const backupPath = `${constitutionPath}.backup-${Date.now()}`;
  await Write(backupPath, content);
  return backupPath;
}

Rollback Constitution

If update causes issues, rollback:

async function rollbackConstitution(constitutionPath, backupPath) {
  const backupContent = await Read(backupPath);
  await Write(constitutionPath, backupContent);

  // Log rollback
  await mcp__memvid__add_content({
    content: JSON.stringify({
      type: "constitution_rollback",
      constitutionPath: constitutionPath,
      timestamp: new Date().toISOString(),
      reason: "Update caused test failures"
    }),
    metadata: {
      type: "constitution_update",
      action: "rollback"
    }
  });
}

Constitution Cleanup

Remove Old Backups

async function cleanupOldBackups(constitutionPath, keepCount = 5) {
  const backups = await Glob(`${constitutionPath}.backup-*`);

  // Sort by timestamp (newest first)
  backups.sort((a, b) => {
    const tsA = parseInt(a.split('-').pop());
    const tsB = parseInt(b.split('-').pop());
    return tsB - tsA;
  });

  // Remove old backups beyond keepCount
  for (const backup of backups.slice(keepCount)) {
    await Bash(`rm ${backup}`);
  }
}

Prune Update History

async function pruneUpdateHistory(constitution, maxEntries = 50) {
  if (constitution.updateHistory && constitution.updateHistory.length > maxEntries) {
    constitution.updateHistory = constitution.updateHistory.slice(-maxEntries);
  }
  return constitution;
}
