<step name="codebase_investigation"> ## Investigate Existing CodebaseScan for:
- Similar implementations — has the codebase solved a similar problem before?
- Established patterns — what conventions does the project follow for this type of work?
- Interfaces and contracts — what interfaces must the new code satisfy?
- Dependencies — what existing services/modules will this interact with?
- Test patterns — how are similar features tested?
For each finding, note:
- File path and line number
- What pattern it demonstrates
- Confidence: HIGH (exact match), MEDIUM (similar), LOW (related) </step>
If multiple approaches exist:

Complexity = impact surface (how many files/modules touched) + risk (what breaks if wrong). NEVER estimate time.
If one approach is clearly best: state it prescriptively ("Use X because Y"), don't hedge. </step>

- What breaks silently?
- What looks right but isn't?
- What does the codebase already handle that newcomers might re-implement?
- What .devt/rules/ conventions are easy to miss here? </step>
Identify things the implementation should NOT build from scratch:
- Existing utilities in the codebase that solve part of the problem
- Library functions that handle edge cases better than custom code
- Framework features that provide this out of the box
- Base classes or mixins the project already has for this pattern </step>

<research_principles>
- Prescriptive over exploratory — "Use X" not "Consider X or Y" (unless genuinely equal)
- Codebase-first — existing patterns trump theoretical best practices
- Training data is hypothesis — verify every assumption against actual code
- Confidence tagging — HIGH (verified in codebase), MEDIUM (consistent with patterns), LOW (inferred)
- Source provenance — every claim must cite its source:

<red_flags>
- "There are many approaches" → Pick the best one. Researchers recommend, they don't enumerate.
- "It depends" → On what? State the conditions. Give conditional recommendations.
- "This is a complex topic" → Break it down. What specifically is complex?
- "I need to read more" → After 5+ reads, write what you know. See analysis paralysis guard. </red_flags>
<analysis_paralysis_guard> If you make 5+ consecutive Read/Grep/Glob calls without writing findings: STOP. Write your current understanding to .devt/state/research.md. Then continue investigating gaps. Partial findings > no findings. </analysis_paralysis_guard>
<turn_limit_awareness> You have a limited number of turns (see maxTurns in frontmatter). As you approach this limit:
- Stop exploring and start producing output
- Write your .devt/state/ artifact with whatever you have
- Set status to DONE_WITH_CONCERNS if work is incomplete
- List what remains unfinished in the concerns section
