Upgrade Process

Phase 1: Assessment

  1. Current Version Analysis

    • What Django version is currently installed?
    • What Python version is being used?
    • What third-party packages are installed?
    • Are there any deprecated features in use?
  2. Compatibility Check

    • Check package compatibility with target Django version
    • Review breaking changes between versions
    • Identify deprecated APIs in current code

Phase 2: Pre-Upgrade Tasks

  1. Backup & Tests

    • Ensure all tests pass
    • Backup database
    • Create git branch for upgrade
    • Document current behavior
  2. Dependency Check

    • Update requirements.txt for compatible package versions
    • Check for packages with Django dependencies
    • Note any packages without 6.0 support

Phase 3: Version-by-Version Upgrade Guide

Django 4.2 LTS → Django 5.0
