Rules:

  • Prioritize alias (semantic) over global (primitive) tokens
  • Use component tokens for their designated components
  • Never programmatically modify tokens (no lighten/darken functions)
  • Maintain consistency across light/dark themes

Professional Design Systems

Recommended Systems: Adobe Spectrum, Material Design 3, Fluent Design, Carbon (IBM), Polaris (Shopify), Atlassian Design, Ant Design

These provide:

  • Perceptually uniform color scales (CIECAM02-UCS, OKLCH)
  • Research-backed accessibility standards
  • Comprehensive component libraries
  • Tested spacing/typography systems

Color System (Science-Backed)

Perceptual Color Spaces

Use perceptually uniform spaces (CIECAM02-UCS, OKLCH) where geometric distances match human perception. Avoid non-uniform spaces (HSL, HSV) for authoring colors.

Color Structure

  • 11-14 tints/shades per hue (perceptually linear progression)
  • Neutral grays (fully desaturated to prevent chromatic adaptation)
  • Contrast-generated values using target ratios

Color Models (Preference Order)

  1. OKLCH (preferred): oklch(L C H) - perceptually uniform, predictable
  2. RGB: Token values - rgb(r, g, b) or hex
  3. HSL (fallback): Less predictable but acceptable when needed

WCAG Contrast Standards

  • AA minimum (mandatory): 4.5:1 text, 3:1 UI/large text
  • AAA preferred: 7:1 text, 4.5:1 large text
  • Focus indicators: 3:1 minimum
  • Disabled elements: Intentionally below minimums (3:1 for differentiation)

Semantic Colors (Culturally Neutral)

  • Informative/Accent: Blue
  • Negative: Red (errors, destructive actions)
  • Notice: Orange/Yellow (warnings)
  • Positive: Green (success)

CRITICAL: Always pair semantic colors with text labels or icons. Never use color alone to communicate.

Interactive State Progression

  • States: Default → Hover → Focus → Active/Down
  • Color indices: Increase incrementally (700 → 800 → 900)
  • Light themes: Colors get darker with each state
  • Dark themes: Colors get lighter with each state
  • Focus state: Hover appearance + visible focus indicator (3:1 contrast)

Visual Perception Science

Chromatic Luminance (Helmholtz–Kohlrausch Effect): Saturated colors appear brighter. Don't adjust for this—prioritize calculated contrast over perceived lightness.

Stevens' Power Law: Numerically even distributions appear uneven. Use curved lightness scales for perceptually balanced progression.

Chromostereopsis: Avoid high hue contrast + equal saturation/lightness (creates "vibration" or depth illusion). Use static white/black components on colored backgrounds.

Simultaneous Contrast: Adjacent colors influence each other's appearance. Use neutral grays and sparing color to mitigate.

Chromatic Adaptation: Brain compensates for environmental lighting. Fully desaturated grays prevent color misinterpretation in image manipulation workflows.

  • Background base: Outermost/empty space (professional editing apps)

Forbidden Color Practices

  • ❌ Creating custom colors outside design system
  • ❌ Using transparency to replicate system colors (except designated transparent tokens)

Typography System

Type Scale

Use modular scale (1.125-1.25 ratio). Base: 14-16px desktop, 16-18px mobile.

Font Selection

  • System fonts from chosen design system
  • Fallback stack for cross-platform compatibility
  • Monospace for code (Source Code Pro, Consolas, Monaco)

Line Heights

  • Headings: 1.2-1.3× font size
  • Body: 1.5-1.7× font size
  • Code: 1.4-1.6× font size

Best Practices

  • 50-75 characters per line (optimal readability)
  • Sentence case capitalization (avoid ALL CAPS for long text)
  • Left-align text (avoid full justification)
  • Underlines only for hyperlinks (not emphasis)

Spacing System

Consistent Scale (8px Base Grid Common)

Example: 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 64, 80, 96px

Rules

  • Define space BETWEEN components (not internal padding)
  • Combine with responsive grids for layouts
  • Maintain consistent rhythm and vertical spacing

Density

Target 2-3× more dense than naive layouts while maintaining readability. Ask user for density preference.
