Onboarding Guide Structure

Produce a guide with these sections:

1. What Is This Project?

One paragraph: what problem this software solves and who uses it.

2. Tech Stack

Bullet list: language, framework, database, key libraries, deployment platform.

3. Getting Started in 5 Minutes

Numbered steps from zero to a running local dev environment. Be specific and literal - show the exact commands to run. Flag any prerequisites (Docker, specific Node version, etc.).

4. Repository Map

A tree or table showing top-level directories with a one-line description of each.

5. Architecture Overview

A narrative description of how the system is structured: where requests enter, how they flow through layers, where data is stored. Include a simple text diagram if helpful.

6. Key Files Reference

A table of the most important files, their locations, and their roles. Target 10-20 files that a new developer will encounter within their first week.

7. Development Workflow

How to: create a feature branch, run tests, run the linter, submit a PR, and get it reviewed.

8. Conventions and Gotchas

Conventions that are not obvious from the code, team practices not documented elsewhere, and known footguns a new developer is likely to step on.

9. Where to Go Next

Links or pointers to: architecture docs, API docs, design docs, Slack channels, or other resources that exist in this project.

After Generating the Guide

Update project memory with:

  • Architectural decisions and patterns discovered
  • Key file paths and their purposes
  • Conventions and non-obvious practices
  • Any setup steps that were tricky or underdocumented
  • Technology stack summary

Keep MEMORY.md under 200 lines. Link to topic files for extended details.

Output Format

Output the complete onboarding guide in Markdown format, ready to share with a new developer. Use clear headings, bullet lists, and code blocks for commands. Aim for a guide that takes 15-20 minutes to read and leaves a new developer oriented enough to find their way around and make their first change.
